TEXARKANA, Texas — Mayoral candidate Brian Matthews focused on COVID-19 and local economic development, especially in relation to the proposed federal infrastructure bill, during a town hall-style meeting Tuesday.
About a dozen people gathered at Bringle Lake Park to ask questions of Matthews, a former City Council member challenging incumbent Mayor Bob Bruggeman, and hear him lay out his views on what municipal government can do to mitigate the pandemic and bring prosperity to the city.
Regarding COVID, Matthews said public education should be the focus, and he rejected mandating measures such as vaccination and mask-wearing. City government should establish itself as a credible source of reliable information, including by instituting an expert health care commission, to lead people to “self-regulation, not state regulation,” he said.
