 Real estate groups press county to zone more land for housing

Executives with the Home Building Association of Richmond and Richmond Association of Realtors say a lack of new housing inventory is driving up prices in the county, and making homes less affordable. LARISSA TYLER

With home prices hitting unprecedented levels in Chesterfield County, two leaders of the region’s residential real estate industry last week called on the Board of Supervisors to take action and address a countywide shortage of quality affordable housing.

Danna Markland, chief executive officer of the Home Building Association of Richmond, claimed Chesterfield is running out of viable lots and suggested the board should be more aggressive in rezoning property for a variety of residential uses to “replenish that inventory.”

“Material costs are out of our control, but what we can control is getting lots on the ground,” she said last Wednesday during a presentation at the board’s afternoon work session….
