Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday informed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that he would not heed her calls to invoke the 25th Amendment in order to remove President Trump, setting the stage for Trump’s second impeachment.

In a letter to Pelosi, Pence said he was “shocked and saddened” by last week’s attack on the Capitol but said heeding her calls to remove Trump in response to the incident would not be “in the best interest of our Nation or consistent with the Constitution.”
Pence, whose relationship with Trump has reportedly grown severely fractured since he refused to overturn the election during a joint session of Congress, noted that he “did not yield to pressure to exert power beyond my constitutional authority.”
Echoing House Republicans, Pence also said Trump’s removal through the 25th Amendment would set a “terrible precedent” and would “further divide and inflame the passions of the moment.”
The development comes just as Democrats were set to pass a resolution in the House urging Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment, which would take a majority of the Cabinet in order to carry out.
Democrats have vowed to move forward with impeachment against Trump if Pence refused to heed their calls and have already secured the votes in the House – though the Senate remains a wild card.
