Topline

Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, will become a Covid-19 vaccination distribution center, Orange County officials announced Monday, capable of vaccinating thousands of people each day as the iconic theme park remains shuttered amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Key Facts

The theme park will be a large “point-of-distribution” site, known as a “Super POD site,” and is the first of five regional sites expected to open in the area.

The vaccination site will open later this week, county officials said.

Vaccinations are currently only available to Californians who qualify for the state’s “Phase 1a” tier, which includes healthcare workers, law enforcement and those over age 75.

The news follows a previous announcement that Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles County will also serve as a Covid-19 vaccination super site.

Crucial Quote

“Coronavirus has brought both a public health crisis and economic devastation,” Anaheim Mayor Harry Sidhu said in a statement. “With this super site, we will begin to overcome both.”

Big Number

39,839. That’s the number of new Covid-19 cases recorded in California Monday, according to the state government, with the New York Times reporting the state currently ranks third in the country for Covid-19 cases per capita. Los Angeles County, which is near Disneyland, has been particularly hard hit, making up nearly a third of the state’s total new cases Monday with 12,617 cases

Key Background

Disneyland has remained closed since the pandemic first began in March, and is the only Disney theme park to remain shuttered for the entire pandemic. The theme park’s reopening has been the source of controversy, as Disney and other California theme parks, along with local officials, aggressively lobbied the California government to let them reopen over the summer and fall. The park’s closure has had a devastating economic effect on the local area, officials say, and Disney’s theme parks have suffered massive layoffs as a result of the closures. The state has held firm against the reopening push, however, imposing theme park guidelines that make it unlikely Disneyland or other parks will open for the foreseeable future until Covid-19 transmission is significantly reduced. Disneyland’s Downtown Disney shopping district has remained open amid the pandemic and the company recently reopened part of its Disney’s California Adventure theme park for shopping and dining only, though the in-person dining options were later shut down amid the current surge of cases.
