Posted a picture of your pet this week in hopes it would somehow materialise in a tree being planted? Over 4million have, using an Instagram sticker created by a supposed fundraising platform called Plant A Tree. But in actual fact, the company has been plagued with accusations of scamming donators, pocketing the cash raised and creating viral trends around false promises.
Now, ‘pet picture plant a tree’ is a breakout search term on Google, with many seeking more information on how this viral trend began, who promised to plant a tree for every pet picture posted to Instagram and… whether it will actually happen.
When initial questions were raised about who was responsible for the Instagram sticker (on which there was no branding, just the words ‘We’ll plant 1 tree for every pet picture’), Plant A Tree took ownership for it.
Posting on Instagram, the company stated that they only posted the sticker for ’10 minutes’ and…
