SOUTH KINGSTOWN — In the latest fallout from the debate over critical race theory, the chairwoman of the South Kingstown School Committee has resigned from the board, citing political infighting within the community.
In a tearful speech before the committee Tuesday, Emily Cummiskey said she has spent hours listening to residents who hold opinions contrary to her own as a liberal Democrat.
But after the events of the past few weeks, she said is stepping down because she doesn’t feel that some of the community shares her goals of bringing the schools back to their original high standards.
“Since my election in 2018, I have sought to find common ground,” she said. “As a liberal Democrat, I sought out the most conservative people I could find.
