 Confusion opens doors for crooks — Scam Guards

The new monthly child tax credit payments are causing a great deal of confusion among eligible recipients.

A poll recently released by Ally Bank reveals: “There is a massive misunderstanding among eligible recipients, as nearly one-quarter of respondents said that they don’t expect to receive the child tax credit because they don’t know how to access it. Around 9% of the people surveyed said they did not anticipate receiving the payments because they believe their income is too high, even though they likely qualify for it.”

The IRS will distribute payments monthly through December. The payments will be made by direct deposits or in some cases paper checks.

Scammers wait for events like these, and the confusion about eligibility has them jumping for joy. They see an opportunity to “help” people get their payments earlier, get more money or commit identity theft.
